What is Cacao?

WHAT IS CACAO?

Cacao is an ancient medicine that contains the highest concentration of magnesium and antioxidants of any food worldwide. Cacao is rich in vitamin C, iron, zinc, copper, omega-6 fatty acids and more! Cacao is the purest—the original state of chocolate!

CACAO’S HISTORY

Once upon a time, cacao was reserved only for the elite class of Ancient Mayans and Aztecs. It was considered the "Food of the Gods" and was a pillar of the community. It was the foundation of economies and religions--a sacred medicine. Cacao was once used as a currency—valued more than gold. In Mayan and Aztecan mythologies, humans are somewhat composed of cacao through their blood and hearts.

From the Mayans and Aztecs, cacao grew across the world, spreading to Africa, Asia, and Central and South America. Today, Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Indonesia, Ecuador, and Cameroon produce over 90% of the world’s cacao supply. The Western world, on the other hand, consumes 70% of the world's cacao. This phenomenon is causing an ever-rising demand for chocolate from consumers.

ETHICAL CONSUMPTION

Considering the demand, it’s important that people source their chocolate in ethical and sustainable ways. Cacao is produced primarily by small-scale farmers & collectives who live on a few dollars a day and rely on cacao for the majority of their incomes and livelihoods.
